Playing Tips

Raise your game with these pickleball playing tips

  • Power isn’t everything

Pickleball is just as much a game of control as it is of power. Slamming the ball doesn’t make you a better player. It will probably just make a lot of your shots fly into the net!

  • Use body posture and court position as an advantage

Always stay ready for the next shot. Bend your knees and keep your shoulders squared. Poor body posture will not only affect your playing, it can lead to knee problems.

  • Keep the number of unforced errors down

Don’t go for a winner on every shot. Have patience and wait for the right moment. In pickleball, consistency is a big part of success. By making few errors and keeping the ball deep and centered, you’ll put pressure on your opponent and eventually be able to go for a winner.

  • Get ready to run

Staying idle and flat-footed just waiting for the next ball to come to you isn’t a great strategy. Be alert for what’s likely to be coming at you and be prepared to run.

  • Don’t always stay back

Staying deep in the back isn’t always the best option to win points. If you see an opportunity to move up to the net, take it. Once you get good at being near the net, an attacking style can win you many quick points.

  • Stay alert

Scan the court and look for an opening that can give you a high probability of making an effective shot.

  • Communication is the key

If it’s not clear, signal to your partner whether you’re going to take the next shot or if they should take it. Say “mine” or “yours” to make sure you’re in sync.
